In this latest banned and restricted announcement for Magic: The Gathering, three cards have been banned from Standard play - "Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jiki," "Reckoner Bankbuster," and "Invoke Despair." These changes take effect on May 29th for tabletop and Magic Online, and on May 30th for MTG Arena. These bans come as part of a new policy where most format changes will occur once a year, aiming to make them more predictable and to restore player confidence in deck-building. The banned cards were part of a dominant three-color shell strategy based in black-red, and their removal is intended to reduce the win rate of this strategy. Emergency restrictions will still be possible three weeks after each set release if a card is found to drastically upset the balance of the game. The next yearly banned and restricted announcement is set for August 7, 2023.
