A lot of people are spending a lot of time bickering over whether or not Chromatic Lantern is playable in Commander. I think the debate is wild since some people are making broad generalizations instead of appreciating that Commander is a highly variable format that is different things to different people. Frankly, I think the debate is silly since no card is universally "playable" or "unplayable" in Commander. Debating Commander playability in general seems to be a waste of time except for it's ability to generate clicks.
...On an unrelated note: thank you for checking out this episode of The Overthinking MTG Podcast!! It's a series where I discuss individual cards and (like today) reflect on the game and the community as a whole. …

Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. Often, though, he ends up yammering about whatever's on the top of his mind that the card reminds him of and a half hours passes and it turns out all he's done is share his thoughts on recent news related to Commander, Magic: the Gathering Arena, Modern, Pioneer, Standard, or humorous anecdotes from his kitchen table jank days.

Wrenn and Realmbreaker is the newest mono green planewalker entering Standard and Commander through March of the Machine, so let's take a look at the card itself and identify if it'll see any meaningful play in any of these formats. The story beat in the Magic: the Gathering March of the Machine that's depicted in this card is pretty excellent.

Gandalf the Grey is a pretty great character within Lord of the Rings and this is an interesting interpretation of his abilities on a Magic: the Gathering card. In fact, limiting Gandalf's abilities to a single card would be very difficult given how enigmatic his powers are throughout the lore. So, Wizards of the Coast decided to give Gandalf the Grey the Blue/Red color identity and I think it works.

The One Ring is the main story device throughout the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy so, naturally, when Wizards of the Coast set out to make a Lord of the Rings set, they better make the ring pretty good. And, honestly, I think they did. The One Ring Has Been Revealed, and It's Pretty Cool
Cranial Plating and Neurok Stealthsuit are both part of a cycle from Fifth Dawn that has a lot of utility in Commander that I don't think is getting realized. These cards can equip/attach at instant speed for benefits your opponents won't see coming even though they should. Sparring Collar and Horned Helm have the benefit of manipulating combat in your favor while Healer's Headdress gives a stark example of why White has, until recently, been the butt of so many jokes on Twitter.

So, I can be a bit of a bonehead sometimes and put my foot in my mouth in spectacular fashion. I did just that on this very channel in my recent Griselbrand episode (https://youtu.be/RuYtRHTdt-I), in which I described the benefits of pitching Atraxa, Grand Unifier to Force of Will. I described one of the benefits being that you get to reanimate Atraxa after the fact... A thing you literally can't do under any circumstance. Whoopsie. So today, I'm here to set the record straight and get that sorted out. Oh, and I also misread Jin-Gitaxias, so we cover that too.

March of the Machine is bringing with it a number of incredibly powerful cards, including the topic for today's episode: Breach the Multiverse. To say this card will be a powerhouse in commander is a bit of an understatement. This is going to see major play in Commander (aka EDH) in any reanimator strategy as well as strategies leveraging the escape mechanic or other graveyard-centric strategies. Additionally, I do believe this card is strong enough to see play in Standard and possibly even Explorer/Historic at least as a sideboard card.

Griselbrand from Avacyn Restored is a reanimator staple in eternal formats and largely considered to be one of the strongest creatures in any format where he's legal. But have you ever stopped to wonder why? In this episode, HamHocks42 discusses what makes this card so powerful and why Arena players might have reason to be concerned if they're trying to ladder up in Historic or plan on drafting Shadows Over Innistrad Remastered once it drops.

Sarulf, Realm Eater is an interesting card in design as well as flavor. He was also recently shown having been compleated by Phyrexia in artwork from March of the Machine. So, in today's installment of Overthinking MTG, we look back at Sarulf, Realm Eater and discuss how this character might work moving forward as an agent of Phyrexia. Also, in proper Overthinking fashion, we discuss the mechanics of the original card in great, rambling length.

Thalia and the Gitrog Monster are teaming up and, frankly, it's awesome. So why am I upset? Well, this card includes a keyword combination that should be special, but it just isn't anymore because of the recent influx of cards that include it as well. This card is awesome, but what should be a major detail is nothing special.

Expressive Iteration and White Plume Adventurer are both cards that represent value adds to their respective decks in Legacy. Those decks, according to Wizards of the Coast (WotC) represent an unhealthy share of the current Legacy met and, therefore bans were necessary. This hit probably doesn't come as a surprise to long-time players of the format or even casual fans who've been keeping up on the news. Izzet Delver and Mono White Initiative decks have been very popular as of late and are winning a disproportionate number of games.

Resolving the damage triggers for All Will Be One can get confusing because there are many fringe scenarios and how you divvy up your damage can have a huge impact on the board state. In this video, HamHocks42 breaks down how to resolve a proliferate or planeswalker etb with an All Will Be One on the battlefield. It seems fairly intuitive, but how it actually works might surprise you.
It's also important to note, this is about the enchantment All Will Be One that is contained within the Magic: the Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Surely, that won't confuse search engines at all. …

Gilt-Leaf Winnower is a respectable card in Commander elf strategies leveraging the color black. The flavorful mechanics on the card itself are also very thought-provoking given the background of the Gilt-Leaf elves of Lorwyn. Eye blights are classified as creatures that don't align with the elven image of perfection and this card defines them in Magic: the Gathering card terms as non-elf creatures whose power and toughness are not equal.

Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a new card in Phyrexia: All Will Be One and, in the few weeks we've had her in the game, we've seen her popularity across multiple platforms skyrocket because she's problematically powerful. If you're going to run a strategy like reanimation or sneak attack that can cheat a large creature onto the battlefield, why would you choose anything else? Atraxa has a long and storied history as a character in Commander as well with Atraxa, Praetor's Voice being a groan-inducing commander to reveal at the start of any game. It's oddly fitting that her latest iteration be an equally frustrating card.

In today's deck, we're out grinding our opponent with Encroaching Mycosynth in combination with cards like Atraxa, Grand Unifier and Spirit-Sister's Call for maximum value. In Standard nowadays, games grind out for a long time and can come down to who has the most resources after the dust settles. This deck is exactly poised to take advantage of that and be victorious. This is an MTG Arena Standard deck tech featuring HamHocks42.

I'm a lover of the Colossus Hammer. Heck, one of my nicknames throughout my life has been "Hammer." So naturally I decided to brand my Twitch channel assets and YouTube presence around the card, even to the point of handing out copies of the Game Nights: Free-for-All printing at MagicCon: Philadelphia as my business card.

As you can imagine, I was ecstatic to see that after handing so many out, the value of the card jumped significantly due to a Pioneer deck making waves thanks to new cards printed in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Like any constantly shifting market, MTG cards jump suddenly in price every day, but this one hit close to home in a fun way so I decided to share here.

Phyrexia has compleated Omnath! We all knew a five-color Omnath was coming before long, but to have it happen because Phyrexia has corrupted it is definitely a bummer. This card is an amazing value commander and also an interesting build-around for formats like Standard and Explorer. Omnath, Locus of All is going to be a pretty cool card that can hit the battlefield as early as turn 4 without any ramp.

March of the Machine brings with it a new Chandra planeswalker card. While the game is riddled with Chandras, I think this one will rise above the rest as an incredibly powerful top-end threat that has both combo potential as well as the potential for just massive value. If you're in a spell-slinger deck, you should consider adding this card.
That said, as a six-drop walker, I understand plenty of decks simply can't afford to run her, but the ones that can are going to benefit immeasurably. Izzet spell-slinger fans, your time has come because this card, Chandra, Hope's Beacon, is both powerful and playable. …

In this edition of Overthinking MTG, HamHocks42 looks at Jin-Gitaxias, the latest Praetor from March of the Machine that proves you can have it all as a card draw engine AND a free-casting enabler all on one card. Getting it to pop off is no small feat, but the top-end potential on this card is nothing short of nuts.

Using words like "Masters" or "Horizons" alongside odd products is often done in jest within the Magic: the Gathering community, and "Commander Masters" has been a joke before, but not anymore. It's a real thing and I, for one, am looking forward to it.
