Into the Roil is a classic control card that bounces nonland permanents to their owner's hand while drawing a card, which helps maintain card advantage in long games while giving control players the opportunity to interact with the board state. Magic: the Gathering's upcoming Universes Beyond Spider-Man product contains a card called Whoosh! that is functionally identical to Into the Roil but contains an image of the classic villain The Vulture battling one of the many multiversal Spider-Men.

This pitch is one where Piggy Banks talks about Wizards of the Coast's need to start preview season earlier and earlier with each set, with Spider-Man literally overlapping with early promotion for Edge of Eternities. While product fatigue is a real criticism people level against Wizards for this kind of schedule, Piggy tries to stay positive while pushing back on the hype train a bit.

This card is a green insect that will likely fit into graveyard-themed decks in Commander, Standard, or even formats like Pioneer. The ramp potential for extra land drops is strong, and it works especially well with fetch lands like Fabled Passage, Cabaretti Courtyard, or Verdant Catacombs. Icetill Explorer is one of many insects from Edge of Eternities that is sure to cement its place as a staple in casual commander.

If you haven't guessed, this block of text is an attempt to appease the algorithm more than anything. We'll see if it helps.

Edge of Eternities is a Magic: the Gathering set containing a ton of interesting designs including this creature: Icetill Explorer. Other insects like Edge Rover, Gene Pollinator, and Mightform Harmonizer also look strong and powerful in their own respective decks. The classic Virus Beetle is also getting a flavorful reprint as part of this set. During the Early Access Streamer Event put on by Wizards of the Coast, I experimented with Icetill Explorer alongside Seedship Broodtender and was impressed at the results. These bugs synergize will together. Other bugs like Biotech Specialist and Genemorph Imago don't look quite as impressive, in my opinion, but could be worth experimentation. Other landfall payoffs within the set include Eusocial Engineering and Glacier Godmaw. While not as consistently valuable as Icetill Explorer, these cards are also powerful and interesting in their own right.

Live Standard Ban Reaction
On Monday, June 30th, 2025, Wizards of the Coast dropped a massive banned and restricted announcement targeting the Standard format. This is intended as the only non-emergency banning we will see for the remainder of 2025. They took a very liberal approach and banned seven cards in Standard and Magic: the Gathering Arena was updated within hours of the announcement going live.

The cards affected were: Cori-Steel Cutter, Abuelo's Awakening, Monstrous Rage, Heartfire Hero, Up the Beanstalk, Hopeless Nightmare, and This Town Ain't Big Enough. My immediate reaction is wildly positive as this hits the Izzet Prowess, Mono-Red Mice, Esper Pixie, Azorius Omniscience, and Zur Overlords/Domain perfectly. Suddenly, slower but powerful cards cards like Preacher of the Schism, Abhorrent Oculus, Yuna, Hope of Spira, and Lumbering Worldwagon could conceivably see play.

Edge of Eternities is right around the corner, and with it will come rotation, so putting Standard into a brew-friendly state right before the refresh will result in a lot of fun experimentation on the ladder. I'm overall very excited for these bans and, as you can see in this snippet from my live stream, I don't really contain my excitement particularly well.

Pro Tour Final Fantasy was absolutely dominated by Izzet Prowess and Mono Red Aggro, and Magic: the Gathering fans are positive bans will touch Standard in hopes of regulating that format.

The question of the day, though, is which cards get the hammer and how much of an impact will such bans have on the format? I decided to weigh in with what my image of an ideal Standard format looks like and whether or not bans can actually get us there. This is something of a rant video from the perspective of an old-head janky deck builder who just wants to return to a slower-paced, lower-power Standard similar to what we've had in years past.

Feel free to rip on me in the comment section as this is potentially an old-man-yells-at-cloud ramble, but I felt the need to express this opinion. Magic: the Gathering Standard, especially that played on Magic: the Gathering Arena is at its best when many decks are viable across a variety of archetypes. Currently, Aggro appears to be the best option available with Control and Midrange being completely absent. Combo is present in the case of Abuelo's Awakening Omniscience, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but it's only seeing success because it's one of the only decks that can race the Izzet Prowess beat down.

The bottom line of this video is a sense of frustration in the current speed of the format and an understanding that banning a few cards can help improve the health of the format, but it won't slow it down significantly enough for my taste. The slower-paced, brew-friendly formats of the past are gone and I would like to hope that they will return in the future, that hope is difficult to maintain.

Wizards of the Coast's current design philosophy seems to be to crank the power level to eleven in each set with an understanding that the expensive cards that are okay in limited might live out their days in Commander/EDH decks and, therefore, not be totally without value. Meanwhile, single cards such as Stock Up can be the entire selling point for whole sets like Aetherdrift.

Here's hoping my frustrations and discouragement are misplaced and Standard can repair itself after a few key pieces are banned. Some day I'll be able to resolve six-drops again. Some day.
